Candle Safety During the Holidays: A Guide to Preventing Fire Damage in Oakdale

12/4/2023 (Permalink)

Keep Your Home Safe This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time for cozy gatherings, festive decorations, and of course, the warm glow of candles. As the winter chill sets in, there's nothing quite like the soft, flickering light of a candle to create a magical ambiance. However, while candles add charm to your Oakdale home, they also pose a significant fire risk. To ensure your holiday season is merry and bright, SERVPRO of Oakdale is here with essential candle safety tips.

Never Leave Candles Unattended

One of the cardinal rules of candle safety is never leaving them unattended. It's easy to get caught up in the festivities, but always remember to extinguish your candles before leaving a room or going to bed. This simple precaution can prevent a potential disaster.

Keep Candles Away from Flammable Items

The cozy atmosphere created by candles can quickly turn into a disaster if they come in contact with flammable materials like curtains, tablecloths, or decorations. Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can catch fire.

Use Stable Candle Holders

Ensure your candles are securely placed in stable candle holders. Opt for holders that are non-combustible and won't easily tip over. This prevents candles from falling and igniting nearby objects.

Trim Candle Wicks

Long candle wicks can lead to larger flames, increasing the risk of fires. Trim the wicks to about a quarter of an inch before lighting them. This not only enhances safety but also ensures a cleaner, more even burn.

Choose Flameless Alternatives

Consider using flameless LED candles. These battery-operated alternatives provide the same warm ambiance without the fire hazard. They're especially great if you have children or pets in your home.

Keep Candles Out of Reach

If you have little ones or pets in your home, keep candles well out of their reach. Children and animals are naturally curious and may inadvertently knock over or play with candles, leading to accidents.

Test Smoke Alarms

Regularly check and test your smoke alarms to ensure they're in working order. They can provide early warning in case of a fire, giving you precious time to react and minimize damage.

Have a Fire Extinguisher On Hand

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your home and know how to use it. It's an essential tool for tackling small fires before they become uncontrollable.

5 Things to Never Do During a House Fire

5 Things You Should Never Do During a House Fire

Experiencing a house fire is a terrifying ordeal that no homeowner ever wants to face. However, it's essential to be prepared for such emergencies and know how to react if the unfortunate should happen. While fire damage can be devastating, your safety and the well-being of your loved ones should always be the top priority.

In this blog, we'll discuss five things you should never do during a house fire to increase your chances of escaping unharmed and protecting your property.

1. Panic and Run Toward the Fire

The adrenaline rush during a fire can trigger a fight-or-flight response. Staying calm and avoiding running toward the fire or its source is crucial. Instead, quickly assess the situation, locate the nearest exit, and plan your escape route. Smoke can be disorienting, so staying low and crawling safely can help you breathe easier.

2. Neglect to Alert Others

Informing others in the household about the fire is vital, especially if you have young children or elderly family members who may need assistance during evacuation. Yell "Fire!" as you leave your room to ensure others know about the emergency and can follow the escape plan.

3. Underestimating the Danger of Smoke Inhalation

Inhaling smoke can be life-threatening, as it contains toxic gasses and harmful particles. Never ignore the risk of smoke inhalation. Use a cloth or shirt to cover your nose and mouth as you make your way to safety. Avoid elevators during fires, as they could malfunction and trap you inside.

4. Attempt to Retrieve Belongings

As much as sentimental items may hold value, attempting to retrieve belongings during a house fire is incredibly dangerous. Leave everything behind and focus solely on protecting yourself and your loved ones. Material possessions can be replaced, but lives cannot.

5. Stay Inside a Burning Building

Never attempt to re-enter a burning house once you've safely evacuated. Many people make the mistake of returning to retrieve something or check on someone, only to get trapped inside. Once you're out, stay out, and let firefighters handle the situation.

Salvaging Items After a House Fire: What You Need to Know

4/28/2023 (Permalink)

Experiencing a house fire can be one of the most heartbreaking events imaginable; the devastating effects can take an emotional toll on your life. When a fire occurs, it is important to focus on safety and evacuation. Once you and your loved ones are safe, the focus shifts to what can be salvaged from the damage.

It is essential to understand that fires can cause different types of damage, including heat, smoke, and water, which can permanently damage your personal belongings. Let's take a closer

look at what items can be saved and which ones cannot.

What Can Be Salvaged?

  • Electronics: This includes items like televisions, computers, and gaming systems. These items can suffer extensive damage from heat and smoke exposure, but a professional can often restore them to their original state.
  • Furniture: Wooden furniture is relatively easy to restore if it sustains smoke damage; however, upholstered furniture is more difficult to salvage. Depending on the damage level, replacing the upholstery may be necessary.
  • Clothing: Clothing can be saved if it has not been burned or contaminated by smoke, mold, or mildew. Dry cleaning and special cleaning techniques can restore clothing and other textile items.
  • Art and photographs: Fire can cause significant damage to artwork and photos, but a professional can preserve these items through specialized drying and cleaning techniques.

What Cannot Be Salvaged?

  • Food: Any items not sealed in airtight containers will be contaminated by smoke and unfit for consumption.
  • Medication: Excessive heat and smoke can damage medications and make them unsafe to take.
  • Cosmetics: Cosmetics will absorb the smoke and may cause skin irritation or other allergic reactions.

How to Create a Fire Escape Plan for Your Home

4/28/2023 (Permalink)

As a homeowner, you must plan and prepare for all possible emergencies, including fires. Fire outbreaks can be devastating, and a clear fire escape plan can make the situation manageable quickly.

Having a fire escape plan ensures the safety of your family and property in the event of a fire emergency. Here are some essential tips on how to create a fire escape plan.

Elements of an Effective Fire Escape Plan

An efficient fire escape plan should have clear directions and procedures for evacuating the home. The plan should have designated escape routes, such as windows and doors, that are easily accessible and safe. It would also be best if you discussed the importance of staying low during a fire to reduce smoke inhalation.

Tips on Creating a Fire Escape Plan

It's essential to involve your family members while creating a fire escape plan, as they will be the ones who execute it during a fire outbreak. Ensure that everyone knows the escape plan and practices the plan regularly.

Teach your children to unlock their windows, doors, and escape routes. This will help you identify any obstacles or safety concerns you may have overlooked. Also, discuss the importance of meeting outside at a safe distance from the home and calling 911.

Types and Causes of Fires

Fires can occur in different forms and for various reasons, including stove fires, electrical issues, smoking materials, and more. As a homeowner, it is essential to understand the cause and ensure that all home appliances and electrical devices are in good working condition. It is also important to note that each type of fire requires a specific type of extinguisher.

Safety Measures to Reduce Fire Risks

You can take some safety measures to reduce the risk of a fire outbreak in your home. For instance, you can install smoke detectors to ensure they work correctly. Check your electrical appliances regularly and avoid overloading electrical sockets. Do not smoke inside the home, and ensure that flammable substances and materials are stored safely.

What Causes House Fires?

2/16/2023 (Permalink)

What is the most common way houses catch fire?

House fires can be devastating and are more common than you might think. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association estimates an average of 350,000 house fires in the United States every year! To keep your home—and those who live in it—safe from fire damage, it’s important to understand what causes house fires and take steps to prevent them.

Let’s look at some of the most common causes of home fires.

Cooking Accidents

Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires, accounting for about 46% of all house fires. Cooking accidents often cause serious damage because grease and other cooking liquids create smoke and flames that spread quickly. To avoid cooking-related house fires, never leave food unattended on the stovetop or in the oven, and make sure to keep flammable items like oven mitts and towels away from heat sources.

Electrical Problems

Another major cause of house fires is electrical problems such as wiring faults or overloaded outlets. Faulty wiring or outlets can cause sparks that ignite nearby materials like curtains or carpets, leading to a fast-spreading fire with catastrophic results. To reduce your risk of this kind of fire, have your electrical systems inspected regularly by a licensed electrician who can identify and repair any potential issues before they become dangerous.

Smoking Accidents

Smoking accidents are another major cause of house fires; cigarettes left smoldering on furniture or near flammable items can easily start a fire that spreads quickly throughout a home. To avoid smoking-related house fires, always discard cigarettes in appropriate containers and never leave them unattended on furniture or near curtains or other flammable materials. When possible, it’s best to smoke outside your home instead of inside it to minimize the risk of an accidental fire starting indoors.

5 Tips to Keep Your Home Fire-Safe

2/16/2023 (Permalink)

What are 5 Tips to Keep Your Home Fire-Safe?

Whether it's a tiny kitchen blaze or a full-blown inferno, house fires can be incredibly frightening. The best way to protect your home and family from fire is by taking steps to prevent it in the first place.

Here are five tips to help keep your home fire-safe.

1. Install Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Having working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors can mean the difference between life and casualty in the event of a fire. If you don't have any detectors installed, now is the time to do it! Make sure you have detectors installed on each floor of your home, as well as near bedrooms. Test your smoke detectors once a month and replace their batteries twice a year (or when you hear them beeping).

2. Check Your Electrical Wiring

If your wiring is outdated or damaged, that could increase the risk of an electrical fire in your home. Ensure all outlets and switches are working properly, and check for frayed wires or loose connections. Also, inspect cords regularly for signs of damage like cracking or fraying—if they're damaged, get them replaced immediately!

3. Keep Your Kitchen Clean

The kitchen is one of the most common places for house fires to start. Grease buildup on stovetops and ovens can quickly ignite into flames if not cleaned regularly. So ensure you wipe down surfaces after every use, especially if you've been cooking with oil or grease. Additionally, never leave food unattended while cooking—it only takes a few seconds for flames to spread out of control!

4. Be Careful With Candles

Candlelight can provide ambiance but can also be dangerous if not used properly! Never leave burning candles unattended, especially if there are kids or pets around who might knock them over accidentally. If there's no one at home to keep an eye on them, blow out all candles before leaving the house—and make sure you place them away from flammable objects like curtains or bookshelves.

5. Take Caution with Fireplaces and Woodstoves

Be careful when using fireplaces and woodstoves—the heat from these appliances can easily ignite a kindling that has been left too close or even spark an accidental chimney fire! Make sure you clean out ashes regularly (at least once per week) so that they don't build up too much inside the fireplace or woodstove—otherwise, they could catch fire when exposed to oxygen again later on.

Reliable Suffolk County Fire Damage Repair and Restoration Services

Taking precautions such as installing smoke alarms, checking wiring, maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen area, being aware of candle safety measures, and paying attention to any potential risks associated with your fireplace/woodstove will go a long way towards keeping everyone safe in case of a possible emergency situation.

However, in the event your home sustains fire-related damages, SERVPRO of Oakdale is here to help save the day. Call our friendly team of fire restoration technicians at (631) 563-1709 to learn more.

Fire Prevention Tips During the Halloween Season

10/27/2022 (Permalink)

Fire Safety Tips for Your Halloween Festivities

Halloween may be spooky, but no one wants anything seriously scary to happen, such as a house fire. And by following some precautions, you can avoid common blaze hazards. The Suffolk County fire restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Oakdale are here to provide important fire prevention tips so your family has a safe and fun time during the Halloween season.

Inspect Halloween Costumes

The most remarkable aspect of Halloween is showing off your creativity and personality within your costume. Whether you are purchasing or DIY-ing your outfit, ensure that the material is fire-resistant. While browsing for a store-bought costume online or in person, check the packaging to see if it is rated for fire safety. For homemade outfits, carefully consider the fabric.

For instance, assembling toilet paper for a mummy costume is a huge fire hazard because one lick of a flame from a Jack-o’-Lantern or candle can cause a dangerous situation. That said, consider using a material such as wool; it is one of the most fire-resistant natural fibers because it is difficult to ignite and burns slowly so that the flame can be put out quickly.

Avoid Some Decorations

While at your favorite home decor store, keep fire prevention top of mind when purchasing your Halloween decorations. For instance, you can find more details about the product on the packaging or quickly search online if you are unsure whether it will be safe in your home.

Now, when it comes to Jack-o’-Lanterns and candle-lit decorations, we recommend using LED candles. Not only will they help reduce the risk of a real fire, but your mind will be much more at ease if you forget to turn them off at the end of the night.

Place Your Decorations in Safe Areas

As you plan the layout of your decorations, think about who will visit your home during the Halloween celebrations. Ensure that your home’s sidewalk is clear of candles and flammable debris since trick-or-treaters will be running up to your front door for candy.

Another thing to keep in mind: You wouldn’t want to place a lit Jack-o’-Lantern near the ground where small children can touch it. Additionally, confirm that batteries are fresh for fire safety and utilize safe extension cords if you have outdoor inflatables or other Halloween decorations.

Cooking: Many house fires are caused by cooking-related incidents, specifically, a person leaving a hot oven or stove unattended.

Prevention tips: Always keep an eye on cooking equipment while it’s in use. Use a timer to remind you cooking is in progress. Make sure to remove flammable objects and materials around cooking areas and surfaces.

Heating: Portable and stationary space heaters accounted for 32% of these fires, but most resulted from the homeowner’s failure to clean heating equipment or chimneys.

Prevention tips: Have heating equipment cleaned and inspected every year to ensure it’s working properly. When using space heaters, situate them away from combustible objects such as clothing, furniture and bedding and turn them off when you leave home.

Electrical systems: Lighting sources are responsible for most electrical fires. Fires started through electrical systems represent more than $1 billion in property losses each year.

Prevention tips: Use qualified electricians to handle your electrical projects, many fires are the result of improper installation by homeowners. When using electrical appliances, replace frayed or damaged cords, refrain from overloading outlets with plugs and use bulbs of the proper wattage for lamps.

Candles: Candles are responsible for 5 percent of home fire deaths, and on average, 35 home fires caused by candles are reported each day in the United States.

Prevention tips: Don’t leave burning candles unattended and put them out before going to bed.

Heating Hazards: Winter House Fire Property Restoration Services

2/17/2022 (Permalink)

Rapid fire damage restoration can hold the key to limiting the emotional and financial struggles caused by a fire.

Keeping warm in the winter months can be challenging, Suffolk County homeowners often use secondary heating sources to supplement furnaces and radiators to help keep warm. Fireplaces, wood burning stoves, space heaters, or electric blankets can produce comfortable heat for smaller, more targeted areas of your home at a fraction of the cost of turning up the thermostat for the entire home. These heat sources also pose their own unique risks, and it's important to take safety precautions when using them.

The Damage Caused by a Property Fire

When you experience a property fire, you may reflect on the mess left behind in the charred ruins of the property. However, the damage you need to contend with will go far beyond the ashes. To repair the property entirely after experiencing a damaging fire, you will need to seek the help of a professional team like SERVPRO. Water may have to be extracted after the firefighters' efforts. While a fire may be contained in one area of the building, smoke can fill most or all the areas, and it can cause significant damage and odors. Our trained Fire & Smoke Damage Restoration Technicians (FSRT) can resolve these issues.

Commons Source of Winter House Fires

Fireplace

Fireplaces and chimneys require regular maintenance, so conducting an annual chimney inspection and cleaning is crucial. A careful inspection can catch cracks that might leak dangerous gases into your home, and a thorough cleaning removes the buildup of creosote, a residue that can catch fire if ignited by a spark.

Wood-Burning Stove

Though not as popular in the modern era as fireplaces, wood-burning stoves have their own aesthetic appeal and are still used as efficient heat sources in many homes and cabins. Like fireplaces, these stoves must be connected to chimneys, which require annual inspection and cleaning.

Space Heaters

When it comes to safety, space heaters have come a long way in recent years. Some older models increased the risk of house fires, particularly models operated with liquid fuel. Today's space heaters are mostly electric and often have built-in safety features that turn the heaters off if they tip over, overheat, or have been left turned on for too long.

Electric Blankets

As economical as they are cozy, electric blankets can provide comfort at night even with the heat down low. Operating electric blankets in multiple bedrooms can often be much cheaper than turning up the thermostat.

We are Always Here to Help

Many homeowners have little or no experience when it comes to addressing the fallout of a fire loss event.

Comprehensive Reports Assist in Filing Insurance Claims

SERVPRO technicians create detailed reports that include photos and a full description of whether the item was a loss or underwent restorative efforts for reuse. Having these reports helps expedite the filing of insurance claims. The technicians also give recommendations for any needed repairs or reconstruction that the home needs to attain pre-fire damage loss status.

Get Cleanup, Restoration, and Rebuilding in One Place

Our SERVPRO location is uniquely qualified to offer property owners the services of both restoration and reconstruction. Instead of having one company do the cleanup and another company repair or rebuild fire loss areas in the home, you can use a single company for both needs.

SERVPRO technicians have advanced techniques that allow us to address all the secondary effects of smoke and soot residue. Quick cleanup and proper restoration techniques can make a big difference limiting the emotional and financial struggles caused by a fire. If you do experience a fire, professional fire restoration services like SERVPRO of Oakdale/North Bay Shore can handle the entire fire cleanup process—from assessing the smoke and fire damage to rebuilding your home, “Like it never even happened.”

WHILE YOU COZY UP TO YOUR FIREPLACE or WOOD-BURNING STOVE PRACTICE THESE FIRE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

Before making a fire in the fireplace, open the damper and crack open a window, keep the screen closed to encourage airflow up into the chimney. Light a match, blow it out and watch the smoke to see if it is properly going up the chimney. To increase the draft in your chimney, burn your fires hot and for short periods of time instead of all day. Improper airflow can cause smoke and soot damage to your home’s contents. Poor airflow can result from excessive creosote deposits, closed or plugged dampers, malfunctioning flues, and chimney blockages or a dirty cap, always remember never leave a fire unattended.

Avoid using wood from recently cut trees, they contain high levels of moisture, which contributes to additional smoke and deposits inside your chimney. Year after year cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and fire injuries. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking accounts for about 47% of home fires and 45% of the fire-related injuries reported across the country each year. Although, NFPA says Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Christmas Eve are the peak days for cooking fire mishaps, probably because of all the distractions on those days. It’s important to practice fire safety habits each day, because cooking and other fire related activities are regularly scheduled activities most days of the year.

REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE IN THE KITCHEN

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says 6 out of 7 cooking fires occurred while the cook was out of the kitchen, and 2/3rds of these fires happened in the first 15 minutes of cooking. The BEST WAY you can do to keep you and your family and property safe this year, ALWAYS watch what you’re cooking. If you’re using the stovetop, stay in the kitchen and watch closely. Also, experts recommend setting a timer periodically to remind you to check the oven.

OTHER FIRE PREVENTION TIPS INCLUDE

  • Roll up sleeves and don’t wear loose fitting clothing that could catch and open flame or heating element
  • Ban children and pets from a 3-foot “safe zone” around the stove
  • Keep the stove and oven clean, turn pot handles in to avoid spills and cleanup any messes when appropriate
  • Keep potholders, dishtowels, oven mitts, food packaging and other clutter off and away from the stove.
  • Clean cooking equipment thoroughly because built-up grease can catch fire.
  • wait for grease to cool before disposing, tossing hot grease in a trashcan could turn into a disaster

Smoke detectors are your first line for defense against a fire disaster situation so make sure you have one installed in or near the kitchen and make sure it’s working properly.

After a fire disaster impacts your local Long Island home, the cleanup of fire debris, removal of harmful chemicals and pollutants and minimizing damage to the building structure needs to happen quickly. The more time that passes after the fire event and before restoration services begin gives soot the opportunity to spread throughout the property causing contamination and corrosion. Contact our staff for help with your cleanup and property restoration; we have years of experience and the answers you are looking for.

Circuit breakers play an important part in every property's electrical system.

When the current of electricity going through a circuit is too much for it to handle, an electrical overload can happen. Usually, it occurs when you have too many devices plugged into a single circuit, but it can happen with older homes if you are trying to run an appliance that uses excessive energy. Acting as an important safeguard, a circuit breaker will “trip” shut off the electric flow, protecting your home or business from an electrical circuit overload that can cause the circuit to overheat, which could cause damage to appliances and ultimately result in a fire. While circuit breakers are reliable and do a good job preventing residential and commercial fires due to overloads, if the power surges are excessive, they can, over time, result in electrical fires.

The three most common causes of a “tripped” circuit breaker are:

  • Overloaded Circuit
  • Short Circuit
  • Ground Fault

Typically, electrical fires are at their peak during the winter months with additional lighting and heating equipment creating the most common concerns. It’s becoming more important to continue to practice electrical safety all year long air conditioners, mini fridges, pool equipment and outdoor appliances can all contribute to circuit overloads throughout Spring and Summer.

Signs of Overloaded Circuits

The most obvious sign of an electrical circuit overload is a breaker tripping and shutting off all the power. Other signs can be less noticeable; buzzing sounds, burning smells, and unusually warm devices also can indicate other wiring problems, such as loose connections or short circuits. If any of these problems persist after you’ve taken steps to prevent circuit overloads, contact an electrician.

  • Dimming lights, especially if lights dim when you turn on appliances or more lights.
  • Buzzing outlets or switches.
  • Outlet or switch covers that are warm to the touch.
  • Burning odors from outlets or switches.
  • Scorched plugs or outlets.
  • Power tools, appliances, or electronics that seem to lack enough power.

Following a residential or commercial property fire from a circuit overload, or other fire disaster. It’s important to contact your local SERVPRO for professional fire cleanup and restoration help, our first step is to assess the damages.

Avoid using wood from recently cut trees, they contain high levels of moisture which contributes to additional smoke and deposits inside your chimney. Seasoned and dry wood appears dark, has cracks on the end and will sound hollow when hitting another piece of wood. Look for signs of creosote and soot buildup, creosote is a dark substance that accumulates if wood isn’t burning completely, it’s a major factor in chimney fires and a good reason to have an annual inspection to avoid costly fire property damage and repairs.

SERVPRO professionals have all the tools, equipment, and experience necessary to manage your entire property restoration from beginning to end. Our team work tirelessly to produce quality results from quick and effective mitigation, to putting the finishing touches on any repairs and reconstruction needed to complete the job.

Smoke detectors are your first line for defense against a fire disaster situation so make sure you have one installed in or near the kitchen and make sure it’s working properly.

IF A FIRE DOES HAPPEN, CONSIDER THESE SAFETY TIPS

  • Just get out, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
  • Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.

People often try to put out cooking fires themselves with a fire extinguisher or even water. NEVER use water on any grease fire. Store fire safety equipment in a cabinet or under the sink – It’s important to have a fire extinguisher close by as well as a box of baking soda or salt for grease fires. The first step you can take is turning the stove off and having a lid handy to put over the pan you can also smother the fire with baking soda or salt. If the fire is in your oven just close the door and turn off the heat. Done improperly your Long Island cooking fire can spread to other parts of the kitchen, any time you are unsure of how to combat a fire your best option is to leave and call your local fire department.

CREATE AND PRACTICE A FIRE ESCAPE PLAN
In the event of a fire, remember that every second counts, so you and your family must always be prepared. Escape plans help you get out of your home quickly.

Practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year, more often if you have small children.

Some tips to consider when preparing this plan include:

  • Find two ways out. Visit each room of your house and find two ways out, including windows and doors. Make sure all escape routes open easily so you can get outside, install emergency release devices on any security bars on doors or windows. Practice feeling your war out in the dark and with your eyes closed.
  • Involve children in planning. Consider having your children help create a fire evacuation plan. Draw a map of the home and have children mark two exit routes and the locations of smoke detectors. Make sure your children know NOT to hide from firefighters or other first responders.
  • Choose a meeting spot. Decide on a meeting place outside, such as a neighbor’s house, mailbox or stop sign. It should be in the front of the house so emergency responders can see you when they arrive. Agree not to go back into the house after you leave.
  • Have a backup plan. If the planned exit routes are blocked and it’s not possible to leave the house, close all doors between you and the fire. Place a towel under the door and go to an exterior-facing window. Call the fire department to report your location.

Whether you’re trying a new cooking technique or cooking your signature dish the way you have countless times before; practicing these important holiday safety tips can help you to avoid major mishaps that could lead to smoke or fire damage.

Fire and Water Damage in your Laundry Room can cause serious damage to your home.

8/6/2018 (Permalink)

The typical life expectancy of a washing machine is 10-11 years, during that time it can wash up to 5,000 loads.

When someone mentions they have a laundry emergency, most people’s first thought would be a red wine or grass stain, but here at SERVPRO of Oakdale/North Bay Shore a laundry emergency is a much BIGGER deal! What you aren’t thinking about is without proper inspection and maintenance those appliances you rely on can really lead to a serious disaster in your home.

Washing Machines typically run a few times per week in most homes, and the typical life expectancy of a washing machine is 10-11 years, during that time it can wash up to 5,000 loads. Washers come with 3 hoses filled with water: hot water, cold water and a drain, that gives that appliance 3 opportunities to suddenly leave you with a laundry room flood, or worse widespread water damage.

To complete a full cycle of laundry you have to put those wet clothes somewhere, and it is convent that the clothes dryer is located right next to the washing machine, right? No one forgets to throw in the laundry detergent when doing a load, but forgetting to dispose of your dryer lint, well that can cause BIG problems. Dryer lint is very combustible, the accumulation of lint in your dryer and vent can reduce airflow, causing your dryer to overheat. An improperly vented dryer can have dangerous consequences and is a leading cause of fire damage in homes.

Steps to prevent a laundry emergency in your home:

1. Inspect the hoses on your washing machine regularly, remember to check for leaks thoroughly but be sure not to disconnect them. The best way to check is to start a small load on a short cycle and make sure you don’t see any water, with each cycle. Better yet replace rubber hoses with a stainless-steel option, they have a longer life span.

2. Give your washer some room, keeping it 6” away from the wall can help prevent the hoses from kinking. Also, make sure you don’t see a lot of movement, an imbalanced washer can move around enough to loosen or cause added stress on your hose connections.

3. If you seem to have continued problems with your washer install a flood stopper. It’s placed on the floor near your washing machine and when it detects water it can shut off the water supply.

4. It is recommended to have your dryer exhaust system cleaned at least twice a year. Make sure you remove lint from your filter and underneath it every time you start a new load. Don’t use dryer sheets and fabric softener and remove the back of the dryer regularly to remove trapped lint.

5. Check that your dryer vent outside is lifting/venting properly. When installing the duct line keep it as short as possible to accumulate less debris. Keep the area around your dryer free of dust and other debris.

Preventing Smoke Damage From Your Fireplace

12/21/2017 (Permalink)

Prevent fireplace fires.

The weather outside is frightful and there is nothing better than curling up on a cold night to the warm glow of a fireplace. Unfortunately, fireplaces can also pose a smoke and fire hazard to your home. There is, however, nothing particularly soothing about unwanted fireplace smoke puffs that spill into the home while the fire is burning. Fires can also start when hot embers from the fire catch on residue from unclean chimneys.

If you are someone who likes to use their fireplace during the winter here are a few tips to prevent smoke or fire damage to your home.

Nobody likes a drafty house, but a house that is relatively airtight may not be able to supply enough outside air to the fire, resulting in a negative pressure in the home. Well-insulated homes can benefit from an outside air supply vent installed in the fireplace to satisfy the fire's needs.

Exhaust fans—like in kitchens or in forced air heating systems—can cause negative pressure, which will drag the smoke from your fireplace into your home. Turn off exhaust fans before settling down by the fire.

Only use your fireplace when it is cold out. The difference between the indoor and outdoor air helps the smoke draft properly. If it is too warm the smoke will have nowhere to go.

Make sure that the damper is open all the way. Sometimes there is a rain cap or even another damper on top of the chimney, which may be obstructed and needs attention. This can also be a fire hazard, so be careful.

Wet firewood can create heavy smoke. Make sure you only use seasoned firewood that is dry in your fireplace.

If you experience smoke or fire damage from your fireplace this winter contact the experts at SERVPRO of Oakdale / North Bay Shore. Their smoke damage experts can clean your furniture, curtains, walls, and floors to get rid of not only the black soot, but the foul odor it leaves behind.

Types of Smoke Damage

7/20/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East Windsor will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

What to Do After A Fire

7/20/2017 (Permalink)

There is nothing quite as devastating as a house fire and once the smoke clears and the fire trucks drive away the real work rebuilding begins. It may be a daunting task, especially when there is such a mess left behind, but it is possible to rebuild.

The first thing you should do after a fire is contact your insurance company within the first 24 hours. Your insurance company will advise you on how to handle the aftermath of your fire and possibly be able to recommend a professional fire restoration company, such as SERVPRO of Oakdale/North Bayshore. A fire restoration company provides services to prevent further damage, help determine which items can or cannot be refurbished and which structural items do and do not need to be repaired or replaced. They provide estimates to insurance companies for the cost of damages and will help walk you through the process of thoroughly deodorizing, cleaning and repairing your home.

Things to remember after a fire:

  • Don’t use any electrical appliance that was in or around the fire.
  • If the ceiling or floor above is wet do not use any ceiling lights or fans.
  • Prevent soot from getting everywhere by not touching anything.
  • Do not wash drapes or other materials that may require dry cleaning.

Hiring a professional like SERVPRO of Oakdale North Bayshore right after a fire can save you time and money.

Puff Back

6/1/2017 (Permalink)

Puff back can cause lots of damage.

When your ignition fails to light properly, oil fumes accumulate in the chamber of your furnace. When the pilot light ignites again it causes a small explosion. This shoots the dust and soot that is in your ducts, or baseboard, all over the room. Drapes, blinds, furniture, bedding, clothing, floors, carpets, dishes, appliances—you name it—the soot will manage to find its way in.

Soot not only gets everywhere, but it is also very difficult to clean. It can’t be wiped off with a regular sponge, towel, paper towel, etc. In fact, that just makes the problem worse! The cleaning of soot requires special sponges and cleaning products that are used by professionals. Worse than the mess, is the smell that seems to permeate everything. This odor is difficult to remove and requires the services of a professional to remove. A professional certified home restoration company, such as SERVPRO of Oakdale/North Bay Shore, is experienced with handling puff back situations. A puff back can occur in large proportions—such as the situation just mentioned—or in small proportions, over a period of time. If you notice black soot accumulating on carpet, around heating vents, a baseboard, or on surfaces inside your home, chances are you are experiencing a small-scale puff back.

If you experience puff back in your home call your insurance company then call SERVPRO of Oakdale/North Bay Shore at (631) 714-2313
